43 "And in that you saw the iron mixed with common clay, they will combine with one another in the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, even as iron does not combine with pottery..." Dan. 2
It's been a long time coming, but at last a significant new understanding of how a major characteristic of our end times was foretold through Bible prophecy and what it therefore indicates has been unlocked. Daniel prophesied of several kingdoms to emerge from Nebuchadnezzar's time forward that would comprise an era Jesus was to call the "Times of the Gentiles." His interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar's dream about a statue and its various parts is rather straight forward--until you get to the very end where Daniel describes the two feet with ten toes, the whole of which is comprised of "iron mixed with clay." (If you're unfamiliar with this vision, please read Daniel 2 for the background.) Just what is that all about?
Whatever it is about, these feet of "iron mixed with clay" are what characterize the final kingdom(s) of the Times of the Gentiles and which are smitten by a great rock cut out of a mountain without hands, signifying the kingdom of God which puts an end to those times and all its kingdoms. The "feet" are the final manifestation of those kingdoms, and are what the rock directly smites.
The historic commentaries provide more or less vague interpretations of the iron and clay around the ideas of "mixed marriages" between stronger and weaker kingdoms. To be sure, Daniel's words can have that meaning seeing as prophecy is multi-layered. But there is a meaning applicable to our times and our times only that the historic commentators could not foresee. And it is this:
The "Six Million Dollar" Prophecy
Daniel's prophecy of a world wide kingdom comprised in all its parts of iron mixed with clay was a prophecy of the time when humanity and its inventions (machines of iron) would become so intermingled as to become indistinguishable, though never able to fully become one. This worldwide Iron-Clay Age began in earnest with the industrial revolution some 200+ years ago. As inventions increased since then, they became indispensible to the way humans live.
But now, in these very end times, the mingling has come to the point that men have invented robots empowered by artificial intelligence while implanting machine parts ("iron") into men ("clay"). Such things were at first the ideas of science fiction writers and TV producers. (Anybody remember Lee Majors as the bionic "Six Million Dollar Man?") Now they are reality. Modern medicine has made great use of implanting machines into men (such as pace makers.) But now scientists are also laboring to implant men with bionic chips and parts that indeed make them part machine.
Meanwhile human and artificial intelligences are now mingled through interactive computers. You can now talk to computers through voice recognition software or even play chess with a computer. In the early days of Disney, men created life-like mannequins that could talk. Now, scientists have not only imparted artificial intelligence to robots and other machines, but are working on imparting emotion to them. Star Trek's "Data" is no longer just an imagination.
Daniel's word about the "seed of men" becomes very meaningful in this context. What really is all this intermingling of man and machine about? And where is it headed? Well, the drive to reduce man to equality with his inventions is nothing less than the product of man's idolatry of his own works, but is driven by satan in his continual plan to inhabit the seed of man by any means available.
Satan can inhabit men. He can also inhabit machines. (Has he ever been in your car's engine?) But his plan to inhabit "humanoids"--the total mingling of man with machine unto the total confusion of their identities--is the final manifestation of human idolatry and the corruption of God's image in man to be allowed by God.
The Knowledge Explosion
Daniel's prophecy of iron mixed with clay is parallel to his final prophecy from the angel that in the very end times when those who sleep will rise from the dust, many will "increase knowledge" (Dan. 12:4). The mingling of man and machine is directly due to the increase of human knowledge--which knowledge, derived from the knowledge of good and evil, is the knowledge on which idolatry is spun. So we see the beautiful continuity between all these prophecies and their implications for our times:
>>> Increased knowledge >>> Increased idolatry through human invention >>> The Virtual Mingling of Man and Metal >>> Iron Mixed with Clay
One of the things to consider here is how we as prophetic Christians should respond to this knowledge explosion and its resultant mingling of iron and clay. After all, it is all around us. We can't avoid it. (Even the Amish can't avoid it!) What I would say is just this: Walk circumspectly, use what God gives you to use for whatever purpose He gives it to you to use (we all use computers!), but avoid the spirit of the "Christian technocracy"--the bandwagon to make a Christian version of every invention masterminded by the world--and whatever you do, don't sell your soul to become part of a machine or have a machine become part of you--spiritually, mentally or physically! (Let the Spirit be your guide.)
The "Christian technocracy" is what disturbs me more than anything. If the world invents it, Christians seem to have to find a way to invent a Christian version of it. Ultimately, this spirit can lead to the creation of the "Christian robot." And you can be sure that satan would rather inhabit a Christian robot than a non-christian one!
Not too many years before he died (and before the fall of Jim Bakker), Jamie Buckingham wrote a hilarious but prophetically insightful spoof novel called Jesus World. It was about a television evangelist in Orlando that created a mega Christian theme park--the equivalent of Jim Bakker's Heritage USA combined with Disney World--who had among other extravaganzas "Christian robots" acting out Bible scenes and giving tours to the park visitors. But eventually, the televangelist's need to copy the world in dazzling inventiveness and artificial intelligence led to his demise, partly due to a demonic take over of the robots! This novel was not only so amazingly prophetic of the fall of PTL only a few years later, but remains prophetic of what is to come among the Christian technocracy. If you can get a copy, I recommend it.
How Does It All End?
Now we can see how when John prophecies of a statue ("image") that is given life to be able to speak and command the worship of the world, it's fulfillment is quite within the realm of literal. This perfectly harmonizes with Daniel's prophecy of iron mixed with clay. Thankfully though, Daniel tells us that this revolution in the mingling of man and machine will not be able endure long. (That should be evident just by seeing how short a lifespan new technology has before becoming junk!) This Man-Machine Kingdom Age in fact forms the weakest part of the 2500 year old statue! And best of all, it is the part that the rock smites!
What does this mean? It means, good news little flock! Our God is getting ready to show up and end these Times of the Gentiles and to bring an end to this human / satanic inventive madness. So then, stay patient a while longer. Don't get mesmerized by the mixture of iron and clay at hand. Keep your secret place pure and preserved. And you will be saved through the judgment on this mess that is nearly ready to follow.
