        “Sunrise, Sunset”

Reading America’s Sundial after the 2008 Election

        Part VI

[Part I]   [Part II]   [Part III]   [Part IV]   [Part V]   [Part VI]   [Part VII ]   [ Part VIII] [ Part IX]

As posited at the beginning, despite the massive prayer force raised to prevent the secular advocates of cultural lawlessness and death from coming to power in the United States, the underlying reason U.S. prophetic intercessors were unable to turn God’s ear to stop that power shift is because they ever failed to regain in their hearts the distinction between our spiritual light and the dimming reflection of our light possessed by U.S. society.

We continued interceding based on our desire to preserve a fleshly cultural reflection, repenting to God vicariously over symptomatic cultural issues committed by others (abortion, gay marriage, etc.) rather than for our own root turning from God’s eternal light, from His call to our national self-denial, from His call to save men from society, and from our neglect of personal holiness.

The truth is our praying was really built on continued worship of a societal image we’ve been idolizing since before the days of the Moral Majority. At that time, we were a fresh new generation, possessing an immature ignorance God was willing to overlook, giving us time to mature, repent and find our eternal bearings. So He continued hearing our prayers during cliffhangers like the 2000 election (which, had we matured properly, should not have been cliffhangers in the first place.)

But this time He would not overlook it. The main body of prophetic intercessory leadership in this country was at last deemed without further excuse. For while over those same years we did mature into a worshipping prophetic intercessory people, we continued offering intercession based on myths of cultural righteousness and national covenants. We neglected the eternal truths of death to this world that apply to all believers in all generations in all cultures without exception. We lost sight of our eternal goals and true mandate to capitalize on the favorable light the U.S. already had to evoke repentant faith in men. We kept “barking” after the reflection of our “bone.”

And so, despite many warnings from those who could see our error, our light dimmed to the point that we gave God no further reason to stop the sun from setting on the prophetic “Day of Reagan.”

            The Lakeland Effect

Though I’ve identified what I see as the foundational spiritual reason for this election fallout, other macro factors and smaller but decisive events played into the Lord’s decision to withhold angelic support from America’s prophetic intercessors. In particular, I believe the Lord has revealed the tipping point that triggered His final decision to let the sun set on this election. It was our response to Lakeland.

The timing of Lakeland in the middle of the election season was no coincidence. The Lord came to prove the church—to see how we would respond to one another over the stumblingblock of the Holy Spirit disguised as Todd Bentley. Our response to this test would determine whether the prophetic intercessory church had the spiritual cohesiveness necessary to take on the greater kind of witchcraft the Lord knew was going to affect this election.

Well as we all should understand by now, the church—both mainstream and wilderness—failed that test miserably! The internal war of words outdid anything seen in the past. The blogs were filled with venom. And the Lord saw it. He saw it and said, “And they again ask Me to deliver this election into their hands??”

Everyone knows it was the tipping of the economy in mid-September that decided the election for an America halting between two opinions. Everyone should also know that economies don’t tip until the Lord gives the order to the angels to push them over. The Lord could have withheld that tip order until after the election, or withheld it all together. But He didn’t—not after what He saw at Lakeland. I heard that the order from the throne went something like this:

“Gabriel, Michael, fellow Elders. I have returned from America, and am displeased in what I have seen in Lakeland and the stench that continues rising before My altar. I have given My People there 30 years in favorable conditions to rightly listen to Me and one another; yet they continue using their infatuation with My Presence to remain enamored of their nation, deaf to My Word, and hardhearted toward one another.  And now they again ask Me to deliver this election into their hands??

“My American people may no longer steward their culture. I have other plans for them. Here then is my decree. I will give them Sarah Palin as an encouragement. See to it the decision is made. Then, mark your calendar for the 15th day of their ninth month. On that day have one of your chosen messengers remove one of the safety pins from their financial system. It will be sufficient. And if he hears any declarations from prophets and intercessors below to reverse his action, he is to ignore them.”

And so it came to pass.

            - “Cue the Circular Firing Squad”

On November 5, the day after the election, Time magazine online published an article entitled: “The GOP Fallout: Cue the Circular Firing Squad.” The writer went on to observe:

When removed from power by voters, no party keelhauls itself quite like the GOP. The party's success at capturing the White House is matched by a violent, burn-it-all-down mentality when it loses. Because John McCain's defeat seemed likely for weeks, the fighting began long before Election Day…

This comment is prophetic in reverse. Being that the GOP [Republican Party] has tended to be more supportive of the culture of life and liberty in which Christians believe, it’s candidates have therefore received the most prayer support from the main body of American prophetic intercessors.

Please follow this through then: if 1) human societies including political parties can serve reflectively of those who pray for them, and 2) GOP candidates received the most prayer, and 3) the GOP therefore most reflected the light of the prophetic intercessory body, and 4) the GOP began to unravel due to factionalism before the election was even over:

then there is every reason to see in the GOP’s factionalism a reflection of the underlying factionalism that characterized the American body of Christ as demonstrated over the Lord’s visitation at Lakeland. (What could have more fit the description of a “circular firing squad” than the Lakeland affair?)

If this perspective has merit, then the loss suffered by the prophetic intercessory church at the ballot box was really an electoral suicide. It wasn’t the Lord who pulled the trigger on the election.
