Though Lakeland may have proved the spiritual turning point of this election, far greater spiritual realities framed this electoral battle that prophetic intercessors never factored into their prayer strategy. They didn’t engage these realities because their love for the America they were trying to preserve intercepted all awareness of them.

Multitudes prayed to preserve the relative light we have enjoyed in America some three decades now. But, while it’s true we’ve had more national influence, the greater truth is our light has only been a “punctuation mark” in a larger 50-year slide into cultural darkness—piggy backing a still greater century-long global drift into satanic world socialism. Charles Colson (not a “Spirit-filled prophetic intercessor”) identified our larger American darkness in his post-election comments: 

How has America come to this point? Why is our economy on the brink of disaster? Why is our culture so utterly depraved?

I can only think of what Alexandr Solzhenitsyn said about the catastrophic consequences of the Russian revolution. “I recall,” he said, “hearing a number of older people offer the following explanation for the great disasters that had befallen Russia: Men have forgotten God; that's why all this has happened.”

Solzhenitsyn was right. Indeed, I can’t find any better explanation for why we Americans find ourselves in the state we are in. We have forgotten God.

Colson marked what America’s intercessory blew right by in their electoral prayer focus. It’s that American culture is utterly depraved, and is so because the culture has abandoned the knowledge of God.

Depravity Its Own Judgment

The 1962 Supreme Court decree abolishing prayer in public schools sent what had been a slow steady 20^th century move toward cultural depravity over the edge. On signal from that decision, the Rev. 9:2 abyss opened up spewing out smoke all over America. We saw revolt against parents and government. We saw Vietnam …drugs…free sex…race riots…eastern religion…terrorist bombings…women’s liberation…abortion…homosexuality—billowing everywhere in just 10-12 years after the Court’s decree! The main victim of this revolt was the American family unit that continues gasping for life under the noxious weight of unbridled teen fornication, adultery and divorce.

A many-headed “Hydra” of social curses became entrenched in America well before the “Day of Reagan” which has never been reversed under the light of that day. And what we must note for prophetic purposes is that this Hydra already is (not “will bring”) the judgment of God on America.

Yet in this election, our leading prophetic intercessors “elected” to focus on a mere single “head” of this Hydra (abortion) and to “talk” to the stock market (!?!), ignoring everything else—wishfully hopeful of staving off “judgment-to-come.” 

Why? Why not intercede against these curses as the blatant judgment they already are and repent for the culture’s abandonment of God? Why do we still whistle “kingdom now” in the dark when what we’ve really had all along is “judgment now?” It’s because culture love produces a quest to preserve spiritual light partly by walking in denial of cultural darkness and the judgment it already evidences.

If we were to pray based on the way it really is in America, we would have to give up our notion of the Christian nation. But of course “we can’t do that.” It’s no different than the Dad who can’t bring himself to admit that “little Johnny” who at age 3 said the “sinner’s prayer” increasingly proves by his fruit at age 18 he was never truly saved. But Dad won’t confront Johnny with his sin or intercede for him as a sinner. He just “reminds” Johnny he “is a Christian” and admonishes him to behave like one, and prays that he will as well.

That has been the prophetic intercessory strategy for America.              

Forces Against the American Voting Mind

Persistent cultural devotion has further blinded intercessors to the many other forces alongside the open depravity that have come to shape the American voting mind. First is the population’s half-century obeisance to the “boob tube,” to cinema and the internet which—besides their 95% garbage content—have by their technological nature dumbed down the average American mind, destroyed its ability to think critically, and opened it to control by whoever controls the media.

Then there has been public education’s diligent 50-year campaign to sanitize children’s minds of any knowledge of our God, eliminate their ability to make moral decisions based on scriptural understanding and to indoctrinate them into believing only government-shepherded society can save mankind. The vast majority of the public now lives under a philosophy of moral relativity arbitrated by media and government.

(Should I also mention the parallel culture-wide “drug” addictions to junk food, sodas and caffeine that also impair mental ability and enslave the vast majority of Americans?)

Want more? Then there’s the fact that America has converted to a multi-cultural demographic in which huge ethnic swaths of society exist under unique spiritual and mental imprisonments, entirely disconnected from the Judeo-Christian consciousness that shaped the founding American mind. For generations peoples from every continent, legally and illegally, have poured into the nation importing every kind of heathen influence with them, with nothing to check those influences. (Sounds more like Babylon to me than a shining city on a hill founded by godly pilgrims.)

And guess what? All these people—from the dumbed-down video game addict on welfare to the latest foreign import who can barely speak English and knows nothing of Judeo-Christian morality either has the right to vote or can find an illegal way to do so with help from the inside. And they do.

Look at all this again, and, realizing that much of today’s body of Christ is virtually as enslaved of these forces as it is saved from them, one can only ask, “What have America’s intercessors been smoking?? After 30 years of a no-win strategy against such powers based on reinvesting light into their own cultural reflection, what did they think God would do this time to “keep the day alive” simply by fasting against abortion, prophesying to the stock market, and praying John McCain and Sarah Palin into office??

What has been their end game?
